The Official Baby Boomer Years

Have you ever wondered what the official definition of a baby boomer is? Do you want to see an authoritative list of the baby boomer birth years? First, do not think that I am the authority here. Far be it. If you have searched for an answer to this question, then you know that there are quite a few differing answers as to what is the correct range of birth years.

Entire organizations have been created around the "boomer" concept and it is in their best interest to make that time span as large as possible, to cast a wide net. But even sources that we consider authoritative do not define the range of birth years accurately.

If you are like me, and you do not trust any answer unless it comes from an unimpeachable source, then you should know that such a source does exist and it answers the question; what are the baby boomer birth years? There is actually only one unimpeachable source for an answer to this question and that source is The United States Congress.

The Official Baby Boomer Years

Many people do not believe that our Congress actually defined who is a "boomer," but they did. All right, Congress did not actually put the label "baby boomer" on the list of years but they certainly defined the range of years and anyone with a computer can find out what it is.

Congress defined that range of years through their proxy, The Social Security Administration (SSA). If you want to know what years define the baby boomer age, go to the SSA's official website at http://www.ssa.gov (remember, do not use dot com, we are dealing with the government so use dot gov).

Underneath the SSA banner at the top of the webpage, click on the "Retirement" link, on the next webpage click on the "Plan your retirement" link at the top of the list and then, in the paragraph below the header "How the Social Security Retirement Planner can help you now," click on the "Find your retirement age" link and you will see the "Full Retirement and Age 62 Benefit By Year Of Birth" list.

Take a good look at that list. Notice that the full (normal) retirement age for U.S. citizens is extended by two months for every year from 1938 through 1942 and from 1955 through 1959. But for the time span around World War II, there is only one group of years on that list that does not get that treatment: the years 1943 through 1954. Everyone born in that twelve year period (all of 1943, all of 1954 and all of the years in between) has a full retirement age of 66.

While it is true that Congress did not instruct the SSA to put the words "Baby Boomers" next to "1943-1954" on the SSA's website, Congress at least defined the range of years. So if you ever wanted to know the most authoritative definition of a baby boomer, now you know: those born between 1 Jan 1943 and 31 Dec 1954.

Baby Boomer Statistics - Facts On Birth, Retirement and Empty Nestling Revealed

The term 'baby boomer' is the name given to the generation of people who were born right after the 2nd world war. That time of history saw over 70 million (70,000,000) Americans born to American citizens in the US. It really was a baby boom and the name stuck to anyone born during the baby boom years.

All those Americans born during the baby boom and are still living will now be in the age group of 42 to 60. This generation still plays a significant role in every political election in the country. And here in lies their power and importance, baby boomers plays a very important part in post-WW2 American history and have uplifted their generation to greater levels.

Economic statistics are proof that all baby boomers in their 50's earn approximately 2 trillion U.S. Dollars. That accounts for over 77% of all the financial assets in America. As if that was not enough of an achievement baby boomers have more than 50% discretionary authority in private organizations as well as in government.

Baby Boomer Statistics - Facts On Birth, Retirement and Empty Nestling Revealed

What is of importance is that the baby boomer generation is now facing the issue of retirement since they are reaching superannuation. Financial constraints of retired life are the least of their worries, baby boomers are facing the emotional problem of dealing with the 'empty nest syndrome' - the feeling that takes over when their children grow up and go out to make a life of their own - on their own.

The empty nest syndrome sets in the same scenario when the baby boomer was newly married and setting out in life himself or herself. The difference is that this time round they have expended all energies and their youth is gone too. The baby boomer may deal with their emotions fairly well because they know they are looked up to and have to live up to their brand name - "The Independent Generation".

A poll that was conducted especially for baby boomers uncovered some very important points that are listed here:

1. The name of the baby boomer generation was drawn from the baby boom that followed the 2nd world war. All those born during the baby boom are called baby boomers.

2. Baby boomers currently account for 28 percent of the American population.

3. By 1957 it is believed that Americans gave birth to 4,300,000 (4.3 million) babies. It was in this year that the most babies were ever born in the United States.

4. Baby boomers look at superannuation with a positive vision rather than a depressed view. Many of the baby boomers plan to set up some profession or business even after retiring. Self employment is the choice for a majority of baby boomers. Over 75% of the baby boomers want to also spend quality time with their families and mostly their grand children.

5. 50% of all the baby boomers are more than sure they will have adequate finances to enjoy a leisurely retired life, vacationing abroad is included.

Over 50 Dating Tips for the Baby Boomer Singles: Where Can You Find Mature Senior Singles Locally

The Baby Boomer Generation has its own share of happily single-again mature men and women. Many singles in the Boomers demographic are single-again after having divorced or been widowed after a former marriage. These senior singles are in midlife dating again with a mature well-seasoned and practical understanding of what it takes to create a real relationship. Sure the senior online dating sites are a great place to meet boomer singles. But what about where to meet singles in their 40s, 50s, and 60s offline in the real world locally near where you live? Read on to discover where you can find mature single seniors like yourself in your local area.

One of the questions that comes up when I lead internet dating workshop in the offline world is where are all the attractive and available over 40, 50 and even early 60s single men and women? Certainly single men and women joke in person about reading people's online dating profiles citing that they are 61 but looking to date someone as young as 20 years younger than they are. Both men and women have this as a challenge. Whether you want to consider this to be "Dirty Old Men" or jibe about "Cougar Dating," this is the 21st century and a lot of the former social taboos about age differences in serious relationships have gone by the wayside. I find that refreshing and generally a good thing. Because then people can open themselves up better to looking for and finding a serious lasting love relationship based upon real attraction, caring, shared values, and aligned lives. Not based on the number on their birth certificate or the number of candles on their birthday cake.

However, the same dilemma which many of the single never marrieds face in their 30s, "Where are all the quality singles?" is the same dilemma which mature singles over 40, over 50, and over 60 encounter. "Where are all the quality available singles around my own age?"

Over 50 Dating Tips for the Baby Boomer Singles: Where Can You Find Mature Senior Singles Locally

Just as singles in their 30s actually must go out and seek out establishing a social life and finding appropriate social venues to meet singles in their social peer age group, so the singles looking to date after 40, 50, and 60 must do so as well. Additionally, yes, over time, there are fewer singles in your precise age group and demographic. This is one of the reasons to loosen up what might be your strict search criteria. Could he be a few years younger than you? Couldn't he be? You like baseball, she likes hockey. Well at least you two both enjoy sports and can engage in conversations about your sports at different times of the year.

Whenever there is a major sports underway, that means you just have a wonderful opportunity to go watch the games at a Sport Bar. Now, I received questions from some very attractive mature single women in their 40s and into the 50s and 60s about which sports bars to go to where they would at the same time meet men in their 50s and 60s. There isn't exactly 1 Hot Over 50 Singles Bar precisely in any metropolitan area. The market is just different. However, what you can do is start to place yourself at the Sports Bars which are more of a locally owned and operated venue in your town or city. You will encounter some folks in the 30s, their 40s, their 50s, and their 60s at cool local bars like these. But it's likely not going to be like when were in our 20s and early 30s where we go to a bar or dance club on a Saturday night, and come home with several phone numbers, squealing about the cute guy we just met and hoping he really does ask us out next week. When you go to a local watering hole, you want to dress attractively while yet casually. Have as your goal not "to meet THE one for me" which would just put way too much pressure on yourself as well as on the folks there. Instead, take a smaller goal like, "I want to meet 3 new people and converse with them. And just maybe 1 of them will be single and about my age, too." Just do begin to open things up socially and comfortably, and you'll have gotten things started for finding senior mature love right where you live.

Baby Boomer Women - Over 50 and Fabulous - One More Tip to a Healthier, Happier You

In my last article, I set out 2 tips for baby boomer women to follow to live a healthier, happier life over 50. To recap, I suggested that you should:

1) Eat Right and

2) Exercise

Baby Boomer Women - Over 50 and Fabulous - One More Tip to a Healthier, Happier You

So without further adieu, here is a third tip. And of the three, I think this one is definitely the most important one.

3) Find Your Muse

For years, writers have talked about "finding their muse" which was a way of saying they needed to find the inspiration to write. So when I talk about finding a muse, I am first talking about finding something that inspires your passion.

But there needs to be more to it than that. A passion that keeps you occupied in terms of time, but doesn't produce income is really just a hobby. Now, there is nothing wrong with hobbies. But we're talking about being healthier and happier here.

And one of the biggest sources of unhappiness for people of our generation-indeed, for the people of any generation - is money. More accurately, a lack thereof.

So for me, a muse is different than a hobby in that it not only inspires you, but it provides income as well. Now I'm not suggesting that you need to be money hungry, and to focus on nothing other than your bank account.

But I will tell you that when your bank account is full, everything else seems to fall into place. Problems simply vanish. Everything seems brighter and more pleasant.

Money can be a powerful salve that eases many of life's aches and pains.

But what you don't want is to be a slave to a job that you hate and a corporation that you despise or distrust. That's where the whole failed notion of retirement comes into play. People want to retire from a job they don't like.

A muse isn't like that. A muse keeps you fulfilled, energized and empowered while it simultaneously - sometimes automatically - produces income for you. A muse is fun and at the same time, profitable.

Amazingly, there are plenty of ways to do this, regardless of the economy and regardless of your present financial situation. (JK Rowling was unemployed and homeless before she became a billionaire writing the Harry Potter series. That is a sterling example of someone who really did find their muse, in several different ways.)

Don't think of your muse as a business, although that's what it really is. The time you spend on your muse should be effortless and enjoyable. It should put you in the proverbial zone.

If you think you don't have one, please think again. You do and it's there, somewhere. It took me awhile, but I found mine. I really want you to find your muse too, because - and I'm speaking from experience on this - it will change your life. I'm living proof of that.

So that's the third step to being healthy and happy. Find your muse. Eliminate money worries from your life and, believe me, things will start to fall into place.

In fact, if you do these three simple things, the next 50 years will be better for you than the last 50.

The Five Levels of Employee Motivation

Employee motivation can be quite a challenge. The decision on how committed an employee will be towards the organization, division or team, depends entirely on the individual. Therefore, the first step to employee motivation is to engage with each individual. Find out what makes him/her tick. The purpose of this article is to know what to look for when you engage with the individual.

Many leaders make the mistake of applying a single motivational strategy to all their employees. The fact of the matter is that different things might motivate different employees. So how do you find the right formula for each employee?

The Loyalty Institute at Aon Consulting did extensive research on employee commitment. They came up with the five drivers of employee motivation, also known as the performance pyramid.

The Five Levels of Employee Motivation

It works a lot like Marslow's Hierarchy of Needs where the first level of motivational needs first need be satisfied, before a need arise in the next level. It wasn't intended that way. It just happened to work out like that.

The performance pyramid can provide some wonderful guidance to know what to look for when you engage with your employees. Let's have a look at the five levels and see how it can help you to find ways to motivate employees.

Level 1: Safety and Security

Along with a physical sense of well-being, there must be a psychological belief that the environment is free of fear, intimidation or harassment.

Level 2: Rewards

Yes, you knew it. Most people won't come to work tomorrow if they win a big lottery today. This is the perception that the organization attempts to satisfy the employee's compensation and benefits needs.

Level 3: Affiliation

This is a sense of belonging. It includes being "in the know" and being part of the team. This is also where a difference in personal and organizational values can have a big impact on motivation.

Level 4: Growth

Employees want to have the belief that achievement is taking place. I might feel safe, get all the money I want and feel part of the team. But if there are no growth opportunities, I might think about leaving the company.

Level 5: Work/Life Harmony

This term speaks for itself. Someone might have all the rewards that he/she wants, but he/she will burn out sooner or later if they don't have the time to spend it on the other things they want.

What Should You Do With These Drivers Of Employee Motivation?

While all five levels are important, the key is to pinpoint where the individuals and the workforce are not having their needs met. Start by offering a safe, secure work environment and equitable compensation and benefits packages. This is the foundation. However, before you launch those new and trendy benefits, engage with each individual and take a good, hard look at the basics. The young smart upstart employee might not be as exited about that benefits program. His needs might be to use that money to buy a new sport scar. The opposite might be true for the 40 something baby boomer.

Some other pointers to keep in mind:

Be aware of the five levels of employee motivation when you engage with your employees. Make your own assessment of what the needs of each individual are. Engage with each individual. Explain the different levels and ask them where they find themselves on the pyramid. What are his/her biggest needs? Engage with bigger teams and eventually with the whole organization about these levels of employee motivation. Do something about it. If someone wants growth, give it to him or her. If they want work/life harmony, make a plan. And Ditto for the rest of the drivers.
