Baby Boomers Retiring in Record Numbers With Average Retirement Savings of Only $88,000-What's Next?

Yes, you are probably one too, a boomer, like millions of us that have retired or are almost ready to retire. We planned ahead. We made our dreams, but let's face it, life and reality sometimes has a way of changing those plans. It's amazing how fast you can spend money that you had not planned to spend: your childrens college, or that glamorous wedding for your daughter, or that unexpected surgery you had, or rising costs and the list goes on. The harsh reality is that the average Baby Boomer is retiring with a nest egg of only about ,000 that they have saved. Many have worked very hard for 30 years to get to that golden day of retirement, to be able to enjoy life, to do the fun things you have always dreamed about doing.

Today's retiree's typically worked major stressful jobs, working upwards of 60 to 80 hours a week. Those who worked in the high tech field of computers understood that working 60 to 80 hours a week was considered by some companies to be part time! Not only were the hours long and brutal, the traveling associated with many boomer jobs felt like a job in itself, with the heightened security issues that affected all boomer business travelers. Now you are faced with making some decisions for your 2nd career in retirement. Yes, work is a four letter word, but there are less hectic, less stressful career opportunities to make money in retirement. Everyone knows about "Joe" or "Dan" who work part time at the local hardware super store, or as a golf course attendant.

Baby Boomer

Imagine a job where you could go to work every day in a fun environment, greeting customers who are seeking help in making their special someone's birthday or anniversary party really memorable. Working in, or owning your own Party Store Franchise can be a very rewarding experience. With each person walking through your door, you get to assist people by helping them with suggestions for their special occasion. They are looking for items such as a bouquet of balloons, party favors, or ideas for their party theme. Usually, they are delighted and surprised at what is available to them. In turn, you have a loyal happy customer who will return again and again. This is a job that can be a lot of fun as a second career, or in retirement. Boomers are at the age now where they are having all kinds of celebrations for their children, weddings, and many other parties. If you are in need of some additional income in retirement, this may be just "What's Next?" for you!

A Baby Boomer's Thoughts on Turning 60

When my first Australian Government superannuation payment arrived, I commented to my daughter that it wasn't all that bad being 'middle-aged'. She laughed and said, 'Dad, you're not middle aged ... nobody lives 'til 118!'

She was right. We laughed and I remembered that I'm actually somewhere near, or in, the Eighth Age of Erik Erikson's 'Eight Ages of Man'. Noted German psychologist Erikson said in the Eighth Age - Late Adulthood:

Baby Boomer

... as older adults we can often look back on our lives with happiness and are content, feeling fulfilled with a deep sense that life has meaning and we've made a contribution to life, a feeling Erikson calls integrity. Our strength comes from a wisdom that the world is very large and we now have a detached concern for the whole of life, accepting death as the completion of life.Well Erik, I have news for you ... I'm not ready to go yet. I have far too much unfinished business. That's right, as I've lived I've discovered that there is more to life than paying your mortgage payments, educating your kids and working for someone you don't necessarily like, doing an unfulfilling job. There's a whole world out there to discover and now I have the time and resources to discover it. To me, 60 is just a number ... like 20, 35, 80. Who cares about what number you are? It's what lies within that matters. While people talk of 'not feeling 60', we have no idea about what it 'feels' like to be a number any more than we know what it feels like to be dead. I feel as good now as ever. Better in fact. I've resolved some of life's challenges and unravelled a few mysteries, I've got a long line of successes, a healthy bank balance, and some very close, life-long friends including my wife. My life is more wonderful today than it has ever been because I'm free; free from worries, from narcissism (I don't care that I don't look like Tom Cruise), I don't give a rat's bootlace what others think, or feel insecure and concerned that I might die and leave young children.

A Baby Boomer's Thoughts on Turning 60

Today I have few regrets and don't mind having a touch of arthritis in my fingers and legs, or that my hair is greying and thinning and that it takes me a little longer to do things. These are a small price to pay. I still play squash and go to the gymnasium ... I enjoy every day and make the most of it. As some wise person said, 'It's not the years in your life that matter, it's the life in your years'.

Every day I live with an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the wonderful life I've had. Every new day is a bonus. If I die this afternoon, I'll still have had a wonderful life.

If you're turning 60 soon, remember Richter's words that, ... life becomes more bright the longer we live and the reason of everything appears more clear; what has puzzled us before seems less mysterious and the crooked paths look straighter as we approach the end.

An Adult Brother Sister Relationship

I consider myself to be extremely lucky for having apart from two caring and loving parents, also a brother-who entered my life three and a half years after I was born-to turn to whether I am happy or in distress. Being the oldest child in our family, I was usually the one that had to listen to all the parenting advice before my brother was old enough to take a stand. Although our relationship has been through a lot of ups and downs, now that we both technically belong to the adult group of the family, I consider my brother to be one of the most caring and smart individuals I know and consider him to be irreplaceable in my life.

I catch myself often traveling back in time and remembering with nostalgia those instances that we felt compelled to fight over a toy or a T-shirt, although we both knew that trouble was on its way since we were supposed to wash our hands and get ready to sit down at the dinner table with our parents. I smile when I recall those Sunday mornings that I had to run to my brother's bedroom as my mother entered his room in order to begin narrating his favorite story. Although I do not remember how this became a family "ritual" that lasted throughout our childhood-since the usual practice for kids is to listen to fairytales before getting to bed-my mother was always ready to repeat the story of the righteous young man and his successful fight against the misunderstood monster that frightened the inhabitants of an imaginary village. The tone of her voice and the moral of the story always made us wake up with a feeling of excitement that everything in life is possible. Well, I am proud to admit that my brother is a living proof of that old saying. Without hesitating and by being confident of his abilities and his willingness to experience the world, he was the one that took first the step of traveling abroad, studying the subject matter of his choice, becoming a young promising professional in his field of expertise, buying a house, and still keep his friends close and my parents happy with his life's choices.

Baby Boomer

The truth is that our relationship has changed considerably over the years. While at the beginning was more or less similar to any brother-sister relationship you have been probably exposed to, although we were not jealous of each other, somehow we managed through similar experiences and common life goals to establish a very sincere and open channel of communication. Maybe it seems too honest at times for me to handle with confidence, but the fact remains that I am grateful to have the opportunity of speaking with my brother whenever I please, to give him my advice when he asks for it and not to be afraid to raise an argument that might not find him in agreement.

An Adult Brother Sister Relationship

Having an adult brother-sister relationship is one of those things in life I cherish and consider myself extremely lucky for being able to enjoy. My sincere wish for both of us is to continue opening up each other, understand and respect our differences, learn from each others mistakes, and of course, increase the frequency of our visits to one another. One thing I miss terribly is his face. He is one of the people I know I can laugh with and cry in front of without later feeling embarrassed I did. I consider this feeling to be unique; at least for me.

Elliptical Vs Treadmill: Which Burns More Calories?

There is considerable controversy these days on whether a treadmill or an elliptical trainer burns more calories. Treadmills and ellipticals are the #1 and #2 most popular selling fitness equipment.

Many dedicated treadmill users are switching to elliptical trainers. The appeal is the low impact, upper and lower body workout. Although treadmills still outsell elliptical trainers. The reason being, the most common form of exercising is walking and jogging.

Baby Boomer

In my research, I came across a number of reports and studies, and in general, it appears that both machines give comparable results in burning calories. In fact, using a calorie burn calculator shows that a workout on an elliptical gives you the same results as running on a treadmill, but you burn fewer calories if you walk or jog on a treadmill.

Elliptical Vs Treadmill: Which Burns More Calories?

Calories burned in 60 minutes by a 150 lbs. user:

Walking, 2 mph - 189

Walking, 3 mph - 297

Jogging - 477

Running, 7 mph - 783

Elliptical Trainer - 774

There was a basic flaw to the results, since it allowed you to compare calories burned at different levels of exertion on the treadmill, but not on the elliptical trainer. Often I see people working out on an elliptical at health clubs, and they are basically going through the motions. The calories they burn are no more than what you would achieve from a casual walk.

So which machine is better at burning calories?

It depends on which machine will motivate you the most and push you to the highest level of exertion.

If you are a devoted walker or runner then the treadmill is an obvious choice. The treadmill offers you a more forgiving surface in comparison to asphalt or concrete. It provides you with various programs that can add variety to your exercise. But to get results you need to crank up the speed and/or incline. Without pushing yourself, you will limit the number of calories you burn.

As mentioned, the elliptical trainer is growing in popularity due to the low impact, and combined upper and lower body workout. Since the machine moves in an elliptical motion and your feet never leave the pedals, it minimizes the impact and strain to your ankles, knees and back. This is an appeal feature to the aging baby boomer generation.

In addition, an elliptical trainer workouts both the upper and lower body simultaneously. The upper and lower body exercise utilizes the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, chest, back, triceps and biceps. Studies suggest that exercising numerous muscle groups increases fat burning efficiency. The larger the muscle mass involved in an exercise, the more effective that exercise is for improving fat mobilization, burning calories and building muscle endurance in an efficient period of time.

This would suggest that an elliptical trainer would burn more calories, but there is no denying that running also efficiently burns calories.

So which machine should you purchase?

If your joints are suffering from strain or just old age, and if you would like to exercise your upper body, the elliptical trainer is a good choice. For walkers, joggers or runners you can't go wrong with a treadmill.

In either case, to burn calories you need to exert yourself. Both machines offer a variety of challenging program. Most now come equipped with an "Interval Training" program. You alternate between high-level exertion and cool down periods. This type of training burns calories more efficiently in less time. With proper supervision from your doctor, try to push yourself to new limits.

I'm sorry I did not offer a definitive answer. It really is up to you to find the machine that best suites your needs, and will help you achieve your personal best.

7 Leading Causes of Stress

In 1967, Thomas H. Holmes and Richard H. Rahe, from the University of Washington, did a study on the connection between significant life events and illness. As part of that study, they compiled a chart of the major causes of stress. That chart, which contained 43 causes of stress in 1967, was updated to 55 causes in 2006. Apparently, society is finding more causes to feel stressed.

If you knew the leading causes of stress in your life, would you take action to eradicate them? Can you eradicate stress - or is it an inoperable condition that will be with you all of your life, possibly causing your eventual death?

Baby Boomer

Which Is Your Leading Cause of Stress?

7 Leading Causes of Stress

1. Finances

Most studies agree that finances are a leading cause of stress. In an online poll conducted in 2005 by LifeCare, Inc., 23 percent of respondents named finances as the leading cause of stress in their lives. Financial stress has led the list in many modern polls.

Some who name finances as the leading cause of stress cite major purchases they have to make, such as a home or car. Others are stressed by a loss of income, or mounting credit card debt. For some, financial stress will eventuate in bankruptcy. While college students stress over paying for an education, Baby Boomers and older senior citizens find that retirement income can be a major cause of stress.

2. Work

Closely tied to finances as a cause of stress is work. Our jobs or careers seem to cause constant stress. In the LifeCare poll, 21 percent of those responding listed this as the leading cause of stress in life.

How is the workplace a cause of stress? We worry about getting and keeping adequate employment. We worry about new types of work or new responsibilities. We struggle to climb a career ladder, overwhelmed by the demands. Work conditions may change, or we may have interpersonal trouble at work. Students, especially teenagers and college age students, cite school work as a cause of stress. Sometimes, work stress is brought on by others. Sometimes, we bring it on ourselves.

3. Family

Family, wonderful though each member may be, is also a leading cause of stress. Arguments erupt with a spouse or other family member. Parents divorce. Children marry. The ebb and flow of family life is filled with stress. A child moves out - an aging parent moves in.

Family health is also a leading cause of stress. A sick family member, a serious injury, pregnancy, miscarriage, or abortion all cause stress. Family changes of other kinds bring stress, too. Adoption, relocation, and job changes for just one family member can cause stress for all.

4. Personal Concerns

Personal concerns that are only indirectly created by others are another top cause of stress. Lack of control tops the list of personal concerns. Every human has a deep-seated desire for control over his or her own life. When control is weak or missing in a given area, we experience stress. To many people, a lack of control over their own time is a leading cause of stress. We want to determine when we do tasks around the home, or at work. Holding a job, participating in the children's carpool to school, driving family to soccer practices, shopping, and scout meetings while trying to keep the household running can create major stress. You would like to control your time, rather than let others' demands control it, but that is not always possible.

We may be involved in legal proceedings that cause stress. We may be wrestling with a bad habit. We may be going through changes. Personal change of any kind can be a cause of stress.

5. Personal Health and Safety

Most people find that personal health is a leading cause of stress. For some, the stress is linked to obesity, and a desire to lose weight. For others, the stress is a personal bas habit that affects health and must be changed. For example, smoking, abuse of alcohol or other drugs. Illness or injury, whether less or more serious, can be a leading cause of stress for many people. Incontinence can be an ongoing concern. Personal health is more or less stressful according to the degree of seriousness and our personal outlook on health.

Personal safety is also a leading cause of stress. Women, more than men, tend to stress about their own and others' safety. Adults tend to stress more than young people, who may act invincible. Crime is a factor, as is

6. Personal Relationships

Whether it is a friendship, dating, separation, marriage, divorce, or re-marriage, a relationship can be a leading cause of stress for many. We all want love, and that is potentially available in relationships, but getting from A to B can be very stressful. Some resort to online relationships that are easier to handle. Others withdraw and become recluses. Either way, the demands on time, finances, and emotions can cause ongoing stress.

7. Death

Probably the most wrenching cause of stress is the death of a loved one or close friend. Even the death of a pet can be stressful. Children are always a source of stress for parents, but when a child dies, the stress is overwhelming. The same is true when a lifetime spouse passes on.

Win or Lose

Causes of stress change as we age. The stressed child who threw tantrums becomes a young student, stressed by the school bully. The young student becomes a teenager, stressed by acne, hormones, and dating. The teenager becomes a young adult trying to handle the stresses of leaving home, adjusting to college life, and managing finances. Life progresses to first jobs, marriage, children, and so on. Even if you move to a secluded cabin in the woods, stress will follow you.

Gaining knowledge of the leading causes of stress is important. Using that knowledge to win over unhealthy stress is vital.

Retire in Ecuador - Why Would Baby Boomers Retire There?

Living in Ecuador is becoming more popular with retirees. Why is that?

Ecuador is one of the cheapest places to live in a country that is safe and has a very good quality of life.

Baby Boomer

Baby boomers have not prepared well financially for retirement...a recent study by Del Webb showed that 72% of baby boomers planned to work after retirement. Reasons vary from low interest rates on savings, poor stock market performance, and high credit card debt...whatever the reason the majority of baby boomers will be working after retirement.

Retire in Ecuador - Why Would Baby Boomers Retire There?

How about those that will do anything to really retire? They are willing to explore lifestyles and locations that were not on their retirement radars previously. They wonder if their 00 a month Social Security check alone will enable them to live comfortably.

These baby boomers above should consider Ecuador as a retirement location.

Baby boomers who retire in Ecuador will find that 00 a month (and less) will enable them to retire and live very well in Ecuador. Ecuador is a safe country, with good reliable infrastructure, the roads are fine, internet access is reliable, health care is inexpensive and good, the people are warm and friendly...the currency, the US dollar.

Cuenca, Ecuador was recently voted the best retirement city in the world by International Living magazine. The third largest city in Ecuador at 400,000 plus has only 700 expats living there so it has not caught on yet. At 8200 feet of altitude, the weather is spring-like year round. It is a colonial city designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO. With a university, it is a vibrant city with many cultural attractions.

For the baby boomer wanting the beach, Manta is coming on as an Ecuadoran retirement destination. You can buy a condominium on the beach for less than 0,000. For big city life, Quito is very cosmopolitan and sophisticated. With low real estate prices, two homes are in the reach of many.

For baby boomers that think they do not have enough money to retire...countries like Ecuador will change their thinking. Boomers can retire in Ecuador and live well on a Social security check.

Marketing Environment and the Factors Involved

Marketing environment is made up of all the factors and forces that influence marketing. These forces can be internal like departments (other than marketing such as finance department and human resource department) or external like competitors, suppliers, economic or political situation. To understand them better, marketing personals divide them in two categories namely macro environment and micro-environment. Let's have a look at some of the important factors involved in marketing environment.

Internal factors:
All the departments involved in business management affects the process of marketing as well, for example the finance or research department in large enterprises. Marketing department is bound to keep their expenses under the budget set by the finance managers or to consider recommendations from the research department. Similarly the supplies and collections can have an impact on marketing as well.

Baby Boomer

Customer markets:
Different types of customers markets include consumer markets (B2C), business markets (B2B), government markets (B2G), also a new type of customer market has emerged as a result of globalization i.e. international market. Where most other departments will treat these markets similarly, marketing team has to treat them all in different manner. Though most advertising campaigns are targeted to consumer market, the type of customer market does affect marketing decisions on the whole.

Marketing Environment and the Factors Involved

Competition:
Competition is becoming more and more influential in a company's approach towards marketing. Competition stems from the business that is offering the same product as yours. A business has to counter this competition through marketing; some times businesses do try to have a hit at their competitors in advertisements (though not candidly). The level of competition is also a decisive factor when planning on how much to spend on marketing.

Different types of publics:
Another important microenvironment factor is the publics (government, consumer associations, financial or media publics). All of them can have an affect (positive or negative) on company's reputation and marketing.

Demography:
Good marketing managers tend to spend plenty of time in conducting demographic research for their targeted consumers. Demography is the research of gender, age, race or anything else related to consumers. International businesses are concerned about various races (Asians, Hispanics, etc) and their different set of demands. While the terms like "baby boomers" or "generation X" were invented to reflect the specific age groups of consumers.

Economic Factors:
All the variables of economic markets like inflation, rate of exchange, fiscal policies and monetary policies fall under macro environment factors. They affect all businesses, and needless to say their marketing efforts as well.

Other Factors:
Other notable macro and microenvironment factors are marketing intermediaries, political stability (or instability), new technologies or natural forces.

How To Define Entrepreneurial Spirit

The entrepreneurial spirit is often difficult to define let alone examine in detail because of its perception as a highly creative and dynamic entity and it is with this caveat that this article is written.

Whilst the entrepreneurial spirit can be applied to a wide range of disciplines and professionals it is perhaps most closely associated with the world of business and incorrectly used to describe many successful business people, when in fact very few individuals can truly demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit.

Baby Boomer

Historical Context of the meaning of entrepreneur

How To Define Entrepreneurial Spirit

The word itself is French in origin and if interpreted in its literal context means "between jobs". It is interesting that a word that has come to project the very pinnacle of success should have such mundane roots as a means of describing being unemployed.

This article examines a number of concepts that appear intrinsic to what constitutes entrepreneurial spirit

1. Uniqueness

In a highly developed global business community where new ideas and business models are increasingly in short supply the importance of uniqueness cannot be under estimated and those exhibiting an entrepreneurial spirit are often associated with concepts that encapsulate originality and ingenuity. Take for example, Steve Jobs bringing the Apple IPOD to the market,

2. Creativity

Creativity is heavily connected to uniqueness but the two are not identical. Individuals with an entrepreneurial spirit are experienced at harnessing the creative process to help them produce a unique product /service or advantage. So where as uniqueness describes the end outcome, creativity describes the process of how one achieves it. For this reason those with an entrepreneurial spirit are often creative individuals who are ready, willing and able to actively adopt new techniques to get ahead even at the expense of being ridiculed by others.

3. Risk Taking

In a western society that is so often risk averse, those with entrepreneurial spirit embrace risk taking and it is impossible for such a concept not to be associated with entrepreneurs and the often high risk potential involved in following a new cutting edge approach. It must be observed however that risk is not the same as recklessness and those demonstrating an entrepreneurial spirit are likely to be adept at assessing the risks involved in any undertaking.

4. Business Savy

As highlighted previously those with entrepreneurial spirit should not be considered as reckless mavericks indeed quite the opposite, good entrepreneurs are motivated by profit and are skilled at identifying a lucrative niche in the market that can be exploited for profit. Take for example, Steve Jobs at Apple Computers who has successfully navigated a profitable course in the computing and software industry despite the market being dominated by Microsoft and IBM for a number of decades. In addition he was the first to spot the potential of utilising the computing industry to open a new market to the music fraternity , with the introduction of the IPOD, the market leader in its business stream. Such actions requires great skill and confidence and demonstrate a clear entrepreneurial spirit.

5. Developing Potential

Identifying, Investing in and nurturing potential are also essential to the ideals attached associated with entrepreneurial spirit because of the need to find differing solutions to a business problem.

Established businesses often fail to discover breakthroughs because they stick to a rigid investment formula that has worked for them in the past rather than finding new ways of moving forward.

6. Adaptability

The entrepreneurial spirit is always adaptable and ready to overcome barriers presented by business problems and is usually quicker at resolving those issues than mainstream business thinkers.

7. Ultimately Destructive

Entrepreneurial spirit is ultimately destructive to its own business in the medium term unless those engaged in utilizing the concept recognize when it is time to handover to mainstream management focussed individuals who can maintain and develop the organisation. This is because true entrepreneurial spirit is obsessed with constant creativity and change which is unsettling to employees without good management and a clear direction. Many of those demonstrating entrepreneurial spirit rarely stay long term in any enterprise they undertake, take Richard Branson for example who after launching numerous businesses under the "Virgin" brand has subsequently sold on many of these to third parties at a huge profit to himself.

Summary

In conclusion whilst there are certainly key characteristics which encapsulate the entrepreneurial spirit it would be foolish to pretend that any one individual has all those traits and even more foolish to believe that such a concept can be comprehensively defined. It is also short sighted to believe that those with entrepreneurial spirit are only evident in the business community, indeed many different disciplines and vocations have historical and existing individuals contained within them that could be essentially described as entrepreneurs.

Well Known individuals exhibiting the entrepreneurial spirit : Richard Branson, Clive Sinclair, Freddy Laker, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Anita Roddick.

Words often used to describe individuals with entrepreneurial spirit : Mavericks, Tycoons, pathological liars, risk takers, self made business people, successful, charismatic.

This question is on the mind of millions of baby boomers approaching the normal age for retirement. Sadly, the answer will be no unless they come up with something quickly. Financial planners have been telling boomers for years that they need to save for retirement. This has often been a case of "easier said than done." Baby boomers are one of the best educated and most successful generations of all time. However, we have been notorious for spending, not saving. There is a reason that we have been called the "now generation." Our philosophy has been that we want things and we want them now.

Financial planners told us that we needed 70% of our income when we retired. That didn't seem like it would be too difficult. We just assumed that things would work themselves out.

I operate a blog about how to supplement retirement income. People assume that I am talking about some type of an annuity plan, in other words, supplemental retirement income. For most baby boomers, it is way too late to look at setting up an annuity. Here is what I actually mean. Before one can retire, one must sit down and determine an actual budget that will apply when they stop working. From that budget, they need to subtract their income. Income will include Social Security, pension income and interest from savings, 401K plans or whatever. If income is less than the budget, the amount left over is what a retiree will need to supplement his or her retirement income.

Will I Ever Be Able to Retire?

There are several ways to supplement retirement income but one needs to take action. The two most common solutions are to obtain a part time job or start a business, most likely an online business because one can do so with minimal start up cost. The best way to do this is to begin while you are still working. I have personally set up about 40 websites and blogs that are earning money. I will be retiring next year and I want to be prepared.

Causes of Ineffective Communication

Ineffective communication hampers organizational success. Ineffective communication results when the managers are not in regular touch with their employees. There may be miscommunication taking place. Lack of 3 C's (Clarity, completion, conciseness) also leads to ineffective communication. Often the managers are surrounded with a pool of information. In such case, they tend to ignore the messages or communication of the subordinates. At times, wrong perception also hampers communication, i.e., the employees might perceive the message in different meaning which was not intended by the manager. Thus, there can be a problem in encoding and decoding of message.

Organizational structure can also result in communication being ineffective. The more complex the organizational structure is, i.e., the more are the number of hierarchical levels in an organization, the greater are chances of loss or misinterpretation of messages. Grapevines tend to develop in such an organization which obstructs effective communication. In absence of healthy open door policy, communication may be misunderstood.

Poor listening (i.e. when the receiver is not focused to what the sender of message is saying) also leads to ineffective communication. Emotions like anger and stress may also lead to communication breakdown as messages may be interpreted in wrong manner when a person is angry and frustrated than when he is relaxed. Sometimes, the messages are not carefully planned (For example, the medium of transmission of message and the time of message delivery are not chosen rightfully). This again makes communication ineffective. Linguistic differences are a great obstacle in effective communication. This is perhaps due to ambiguity of language. Managers should try to overcome all the causes for ineffective communication so as to ensure organizational success.
