Characteristics of Baby Boomers - The Good And The Bad Involved

Each person is different in their own way. This makes him/her different from the others. Even siblings differ a lot. Still, with the distinct characteristics of every person, he/she still should be able to achieve a good relation with other people.

Lots of generations have existed and also exist now. For ages now, each and every one of them has a certain uniqueness that makes them different from the others. If you are a baby boomer, this would obviously be known by you.

What or rather who are baby boomers? The answer is that people born after the II World War are baby boomers who were babies born between 1946 and 1964, the prospering time of a country after war.

Characteristics of Baby Boomers - The Good And The Bad Involved

Baby Boomers have characteristics that are very different and unique when compared to that of the other generations. This maybe the result of the fact that they were brought up in an American Military dominated world. They lead life in a world which offers wonders like awesome gadgets and household appliances. During that time, you found unemployed individuals only very rarely. In other words, almost all the families lived a happy and prosperous life.

The academic leadership, political, cultural and also industrial classes are also dominated almost completely by the baby boomers. The prominent individuals, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush are baby boomers and both illustrate diverging ranges of values and attitudes.

The baby boomers' families have the maximum incomes in America. There are also early and late boomers and the generation is marked mostly by early boomers as late boomers did not experience military drafts. The late boomers were more identified by many cultural factors which they were even able to share.

The late boomers, also, are called as the X's of the early generation. Presently, they are in a position where they wish to make a historical mark. The birth of baby boomers indeed makes history, and may even be the reason as to why they, in their right, are idealists. They are supposed to have a very big influence and impact over political and cultural matters. They belong to higher positions of power and the leaders there exhibit vision, decisiveness and can even withstand the worst of situations.

But baby boomers are famous not only for their positive attitude, but also for tendencies that are destructive like ruthlessness, arrogance and selfishness that can result in factional strife or outright despotism.

During the midlife of any baby boomer, they re-evaluate all things that have any relationship to their personal life. Those that have families concentrate on the success and failures obtained by their children as they want only what are best for them. A few boomers go even to the extent of directing and managing the lives of their children.

They are very much over-protective parents. They wish to sanitize everything that is seen by their children, even television programs. This is completely opposite to their childhood when they wanted to indulge everything with very few restrictions. Through their children, they wish to make improvements in the society.

Baby boomers, though being known as counter-cultural types and as hippies, also have interests in personal and social improvement. However, this, usually is exhibited after they become old.

Baby boomers were also greatly criticized for being anti - youth and ageist. This is evidenced further by the phrase 'do not trust anyone who is over 30'. However, not all of them are like this. There are even those who follow the society's social norms in their time.

All people, boomer or not, are all indeed important individuals who have the potential to contribute a lot for the world. People ought not to concentrate on the generation or era that they are from, but must make sure they do everything that will contribute to prosperity and peace of mankind.

Every person has characteristics that are positive as well as negative. Nobody is perfect, and it is an established fact. There are people who claim to be perfectionists. However this does not mean that they are perfect as people. It is only natural to make mistakes being a human being. But, the important thing is that one must learn from the experience given by the mistakes committed in the past. If you wish to improve your own self, you can do so. However, you must ensure that the improvement is for the better.

Impact of Baby Boomers on American Society

Demographers' defined the baby boom as a birth surge started in 1946, after the World War II and reached its peak in 1957 and continued until 1964 because of the postwar prosperity. Most people uses "generation" as their term but demographers precisely referred it as "cohort" (group of individuals experiencing a certain event within a specified time). This reveals that social changes interconnect with the life of every baby boomer.

There two groups of baby boomers. The babies born from 1946 to 1955 were called early boomers. Those who were born from 1956 to 1964 were called as late boomers. The last set were born during the first tour of Beatles in America and the first early ones was approximately 18 years that time. They are were noticeable because of their big populations. They crowded junior high, elementary schools, high schools, labor market, and colleges.

Studies show that the impacts brought about by the society where baby boomers grew up contributes a lot in reshaping the society. They never think like their parents. Because the population of these cohorts is unprecedented during the 20th century, their beliefs and behaviors are then predicted to dominate things.

Impact of Baby Boomers on American Society

But there is also a great discrepancy in terms of economic status between early and late boomers. Compared to the energetic job market and emerging economy laid beneath the feet of early ones, late boomers needs adjustment on economic shifts. It is due to the rapid growth of service sectors, jobs for middle class became less stable, changing locations of workers, and career market adjustments.

Most are considered economic security as an elusive thing. They are the people who were born after the era of civil rights. Conducted studies even reveals income differences according to ethnicity, race, and birthplace creating ethnic classes. It was because one third of the population are Hispanic, African-American, or Asian besides the black and white Americans. Take for instance, the black boomer's generation are considered inferior than whites, although the generation were rated the best in terms of education.

It is a fact that the life was accompanied by postwar transformations changing the American society. The ideas about sexuality, gender, and family were altered profoundly. Likewise, parenthood changed, old age and retirement was redefined, and labor forces were transformed. Even in their old age, they seize opportunity to stay involved and active like staying in their work force to meet the responsibilities of supporting their children.

The changes in the society were never brought solely by the stereotype but also the conservative types like Seth Grossman. They expressed themselves through street protests while the conservative use other forms such as leaflets, student newspapers, and forums. Although their actions did not attract the attention of media but they achieved their success when they forced a referendum which resulted in the withdrawal of Duke students from the National Student Association.

Conservative may not be a part of the projected boomer's image but they became a strong force in making their way silently. They are not even in the front page of the newspapers because they still attend their class while others were boycotting. Nevertheless, they have supported conservative politicians like George Wallace in 1968.

One third of the populations of early boomers served during the Vietnam War. Other made a name in different fields throughout history. Joyce Johnson was an African-American who belongs to the stereotype her activist work in her graduate school. When she entered Duke School, she sought for advancement not only for herself but her entire race. She belongs in the Afro-American Society involved in the iconic events in the Duke campus during the 60s. Grossman and Johnson are baby boomers who contributed great change in their society.

Deep understanding about the baby boom generation is very important as they advanced on to their old age. It should be more of demographic curiosities because if demographic bulge move continuously on the system, then economic differences also persists. They once do their best in shaping the society providing significant impacts on the lives of many people besides themselves.

Women's Role in Society

The 18th and early 19th century consisted of an agricultural society wherein the family worked as a unit, each contributing to the growth and prosperity of the unit. Education and healthcare was provided within the home. Every member of the household was engaged in a skill that would enhance their economic viability. These values were an integral part of their life and their success was measured by how industrious they could be.

Along with industrialization, the 19th century brought with it a change in the family as a cohesive unit. Outside influences directed the course they would take. The home was no longer the core of economic production, but was now the catalyst whereby all labor was forced out.

Education and healthcare institutions became the guardians of the children. Classes began to form and independent families were no longer the norm but, rather, the exception. The age of the independent family has been replaced with an emergence of families in poverty, despair, loneliness, and frustration.

Women's Role in Society

Latch-key kids, a high divorce rate, two-paycheck households, single family households, and a decline in the respect given to the elderly is a common practice.

Moreover, the role of women in today's society has dramatically changed. In researching the question as to whether there is a burden on the women of today, the overwhelming majority of women I spoke to said yes.

One key issue is that of respectability. A "stay-at-home mom" is not considered to have a meaningful role in today's society. Add to this the pressure of having to work in order to make ends meet. Moreover, she is not valued for the many contributions she makes to her family and to the household.

In this patriarchal society, motherhood is a low priority. If a woman is forced out into the workplace, she is still viewed as less than equal to men. Unfortunately, women have to compete every day to gain the respect they so deserve.

Recently, Congress passed the Lily Ledbetter Act which allows equal pay for equal work. While this is a great step forward in the compensation area, there is still the matter of respect. It was the focus of the Presidential campaign, and still needs to be addressed today.

An example of this is evidenced by a short conversation between a man and a woman that went something like this: "Man: What do you do? Woman: I am a stay-at-home mom. Man: Oh. What else do you do?"

Throat Constriction Or Spasm Conditions of the Esophagus and Reflux on the Increase

Are you getting food stuck at the top of your throat or chest? It feels like your esophagus has collapsed and you can't even swallow the saliva in your mouth. What happens is your lower esophagus muscle or sphincter muscle doesn't relax properly to let food enter your stomach. Your muscles in your esophagus that allow food or liquid to pass are usually closed when you are not swallowing.

It may seem to be right the opposite, but your throat is normally closed, until you swallow. I personally have experienced this sticking or closed throat situation and it was absolutely nerve racking the first time or two. Not that each time I've experienced it hasn't been, but I have learned to deal with it in a more calming fashion now.

The worst reaction to your throat contraction or sticking is to panic. Once you realize your throat will not allow you to swallow and food is lodged, you can still breathe, so relax as much as possible. The time it takes for your throat to open can vary considerably. My throat constrictions situations have varied from a few seconds to several minutes. There was one occasion where it was stuck for approximately 45 minutes. The types of food usually are common that trigger these throat constrictions. From coated pills, to lettuce and red meats are the most common among sufferers of throat constriction. As time goes on and you encounter more occasions of throat constrictions you may have more foods that become triggers. Cheeses and baked potatoes may also cause you to experience the throat constrictions too.

My first experience actually led me to the ER to have the red meat stuck in my throat to be pushed down with the help of ER personnel. I later went to an ear nose and throat doctor that took a camera scope down my throat and determined some minor throat abrasions but nothing more.

Throat Constriction Or Spasm Conditions of the Esophagus and Reflux on the Increase

Some other interesting facts that I have gather with my personal experiences with my throat closing while eating is, it's an immediate knowing as to what is happening and as I said before, do not panic, it is not life threatening. You can still breathe. If you can get outside so that you can continue to spit your saliva as it continues to build in your throat, do that. You never realizes how much you salivate until you can't swallow it. So many helpful souls will try to get you to drink something. This doesn't work. If you can take very small sips of water. Any other fluid usually contains sugar or other flavors that may prevent the throat from opening.

Another fact that seems to be quite obvious is the age factor. Since my experiences, I have talked to others and it seems to happen over 40 years of age more often. The unmistakable gurgling sound when a person is experiencing the throat collapse seems universal.

Since I have not sought more medical attention, being the typical male, I have done some things that affected the frequency of this event. I chose to lose some weight and mysteriously this throat constriction problem simple went away after I had lost approximately 15 pounds. I thought maybe this constriction thing is tied to being over weight. It held true until about a year later I had regained the
weight I lost and my throat spasms or constrictions returned.

A friend of mine for some 30 years, is a few years older than me, and he too has fought this problem. He had had a throat cancer and fortunately has beat that, but he later had the throat spasms. He went for several throat stretching treatments and felt relief for a period of a few months before it returned again.

My brother is 45 years old and it has started happening to him. He is more doctor shy, than I am, and has used me as a unqualified medical advisor or guinea pig. This is not advisable but it's the reality. So, aging is a factor and reflux also seems to tie in to this condition as well.

Reflux is more treatable from an medical understanding of what is happening. With reflux, this condition is caused by spicy foods and a weak stomach flap. Laying down or trying to sleep can be a bad trigger to reflux. The stomach flap relaxes and doesn't do it's job of keeping food in your stomach. As the flap is open when it should not be, your stomach acids are released into your throat and literally burns your esophagus or throat.

Reflux treatments vary, but one option is to have a minor surgery to tighten the flap, for lack of a better medical explanation. This is a more long term treatment. There are other treatments available and without surgery. Each person is affected somewhat differently or to differing degrees, so you have to decide your what your options are and the treatment you choose.

As we baby boomers continue to live and age, the health conditions that we face will also increase, and with health insurance so out of control, if we can help each other to better describe our conditions, hopefully we can control our costs and doctor visits as well.

So, in conclusion, I would first try to lose weight, at least 10 pounds and see if the throat constrictions go away or lessen. I would strongly suggest staying away from coated pills. This seems to be a chemical triggering affect, of the coated caplet and your throat sensors. I would advise you to select your foods wisely. Certain foods trigger this problem and if you are determined to eat what you wish, then cut your food in small bites and drink plain water with your food. Drinks that have sugar in them seem to be a bad combination with certain foods.

For some reason this medical condition is not widely known or understood with many doctors and you will probably be told that when this condition occurs, the food is actually further down your throat than you think, this is incorrect. It feels like the blockage is right at the top of your throat and it is in most cases.

There is a doctor, a Dr. Robert Bastian, that has a you-tube video that better explains this throat constriction spasm condition and he has some 6 options you may want to consider and he can give you a better way of explaining to your local doctor what exactly is happening. I am providing this information for your betterment and I am not advising you in any way to treat this condition on your own. Sometimes it is beneficial to share personal experiences and it helps you to know you are not alone in your similar ailments. I would watch the video and go from there to your doctor with what you have learned.
